Chapter 2 - The Switched Bowls

Thomas frantically grabbed his mother's head, pulling her face out of the soup, staining her beige lace dress. Brenda was completely unresponsive, her breathing shallow and ragged.

Liliana calmly reached across the table and grabbed Brenda’s shoulder, feigning concern, but her realistic micro-expressions were entirely cold and calculating. With her free hand, Liliana grabbed her smartphone off the table.

She didn't look at her dying mother-in-law. She stared directly into Thomas's panicked eyes while dialing 911.

"My mother-in-law is unresponsive," Liliana said into the phone, perfectly faking a trembling, terrified voice. "I think there was medication in her food."

Thomas froze. The sheer, blinding panic on his handsome face violently vanished into a mask of hollow, paralyzing shock. His blood turned to absolute ice. He looked at his wife's bowl of soup, and then at his mother's bowl.

"What are you talking about?" Thomas whispered, his voice trembling with sheer terror.

He realized in a fraction of a second that the bowls had been swapped. The heavy, lethal sedative wasn't meant for his mother. It was meant for his wife.

Suddenly, the blinding red and blue lights of an emergency ambulance flashed through the dining room windows, painting the walls in chaotic colors.
