Chapter 1 - The Birthday Ambush

The morning after Harper’s eighteenth birthday, the family breakfast room was bathed in soft, golden sunlight. The smell of fresh cinnamon rolls and expensive dark roast coffee filled the air. It was a picture-perfect suburban morning, designed to make everything look incredibly loving and normal.

But Harper Bennett wasn't fooled. The 18-year-old sat at the heavy wooden table, her straight brown hair tucked neatly behind her ears. Dressed in a simple pale-blue sweater and dark jeans, she looked incredibly young, yet her dark eyes were quiet, observant, and unexpectedly composed.

Suddenly, her 25-year-old sister, Cassidy, threw her arms around Harper in a suffocating, enthusiastic hug. Cassidy’s shoulder-length blonde hair bounced over her cream cardigan as she squeezed Harper tight.

"Thank you for my house!" Cassidy squealed, her voice vibrating with sheer excitement. She pulled back and smiled brightly toward their parents at the other end of the table, entirely unaware that Harper had never approved a single purchase.

At the head of the table, their father, Martin, sat in his navy collared shirt. Without looking Harper in the eye, he slid a thick, beige property-purchase folder across the table, followed by a heavy silver pen.
