Chapter 4 - The Closed Folder

The silence in the breakfast room was suffocating. Cassidy was practically bouncing in her beige trousers, staring at the silver pen, waiting for Harper to just sign her life away so Cassidy could get the keys to her new mansion.
"Come on, Harp," Cassidy urged, taking a sip of her coffee. "The real estate agent needs it by noon. I'm already picking out furniture for the guest room! You can come stay with me during the holidays!"
Harper stared at the silver pen. She thought about her grandfather, the only person who had ever truly seen her. The man who had whispered to her on his deathbed that this money was her ticket to freedom.
A brief, disbelieving laugh suddenly escaped Harper’s lips.
It wasn't a loud laugh, but it was so utterly out of character for the quiet, compliant teenager that it made the entire room freeze.
Harper didn't pick up the pen. She left it completely untouched. Slowly and calmly, she reached out and closed the thick beige folder. She pushed it back across the wooden table, right toward her father.
"The money isn't where you think it is anymore," Harper said.
