Chapter 2 - The Golden Sister

Harper looked down at the beige folder resting near her plate of cinnamon rolls. Peeking out from the edges was a glossy house floor plan and a towering stack of legal documents.

Her mother, Denise, sat across from her, wearing a burgundy blouse. Denise’s neatly styled brown hair didn't move as she reached across the table, offering a perfectly practiced, pleased smile.

"We wanted it to be a surprise, sweetheart," Denise cooed, resting her hand gently on the table, trying to make contact with Harper. "You know how hard Cassidy has been working since her divorce. This new house is exactly what she needs for a fresh start. And as a family, we take care of each other."

Harper felt a cold sickness settle in her stomach. It was always about Cassidy.

When Harper was ten, their wealthy grandfather had passed away. Recognizing the blatant, toxic favoritism Denise and Martin showed toward Cassidy, their grandfather had set up an ironclad trust fund exclusively for Harper, set to unlock the exact day she turned eighteen. It contained nearly two million dollars—enough to pay for her college, a home, and a future completely free of her controlling parents.
