Chapter 9 - The Final Goodbye

Harper looked back at the pathetic, crying mess of a family sitting at the table. Her mother was hyperventilating, her father was begging, and her golden sister was weeping into her hands.
"You didn't care about ruining me," Harper said softly, her voice filled with quiet, absolute finality. "You didn't care that you were stealing my future, my college, my security. You were perfectly happy to leave me with absolutely nothing just to make Cassidy smile."
Harper adjusted her backpack over her shoulder. She had already packed everything she cared about into the trunk of her car last night.
"Mr. Vance is waiting for me downtown," Harper stated, not a single tear in her eyes. "He helped me get accepted into a private university in London. My flight leaves at noon. The new trust will cover my tuition, my housing, and my new life."
"You can't just leave us!" Denise shrieked, running toward the door, trying to block Harper's exit. "We are your parents!"
Harper didn't even flinch. She simply stared her mother down until Denise, realizing she had absolutely no power left, slowly backed away.
