Chapter 8 - The Binding Contract

The reality of the beige folder resting on the table finally hit Martin like a physical blow. He began to hyperventilate, his hands shaking violently as he opened the documents and stared at his own signature.
"Oh my god," Martin whispered, his voice cracking in sheer panic.
"What?" Denise demanded, rushing to his side and grabbing his arm. "Martin, what does it mean?"
Harper grabbed her jacket from the back of the chair. "It means he signed a legally binding, non-contingent contract for a 1.2 million dollar house," she explained calmly. "Since my money isn't in escrow, the sellers are going to demand the funds from him. And when he can't pay, they are going to sue him for breach of contract. They will take this house. They will take your retirement. They will take everything."
Cassidy let out a loud, high-pitched wail and collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically. Her dream of a free luxury mansion had just destroyed her parents' entire financial future.
"Harper, please!" Martin begged, tears streaming down his face as he looked at the daughter he had neglected for eighteen years. "You can't let them ruin us! Just call Mr. Vance! Transfer the money back! I'll never ask you for anything ever again, I swear it!"
