Chapter 10 - The London Horizon

Harper walked out the front door of her childhood home and never looked back.

Behind her, the screaming and crying of her parents and sister echoed through the walls, but it was just white noise to her now. She got into her car, started the engine, and drove toward the city, feeling an overwhelming, beautiful sense of complete freedom.

Weeks later, the fallout was absolute. The real estate sellers sued Martin for breach of contract, resulting in massive legal fees that forced him to put his own house on the market just to avoid bankruptcy. Cassidy was forced to move into a tiny, rundown studio apartment on the bad side of town, and Denise had to go back to work as a receptionist to help pay off their massive debts. Their obsession with stealing from their youngest daughter had left them with absolutely nothing.

Meanwhile, Harper was sitting in a warm, cozy café in London. She was wearing a thick wool coat, sipping a latte, and looking over her new university textbooks. She had her grandfather's money safely secured, a brilliant future ahead of her, and for the first time in her life, she was truly, deeply happy.

If your family tried to steal your inheritance on your eighteenth birthday, would you have left them with the bill?
