Chapter 1 - The Empty Chair

The spacious, elegant American dining room was a cinematic masterpiece of Thanksgiving warmth. Soft amber light from the crystal chandeliers glowed against the polished dark wooden table. A golden roasted turkey, cranberry sauce, and glowing ivory candles created a picture-perfect holiday scene. But as Richard stepped into the doorway, the warm atmosphere violently shattered.
Richard, a thirty-four-year-old man wearing a dark navy-blue button-down shirt and beige trousers, stopped dead in his tracks. His tired, emotionally wounded eyes locked onto the left side of the table.
Sitting comfortably among his family, wearing an elegant dark emerald-green velvet dress and holding a glass of white wine, was Claire. His unfaithful wife. The woman who had ruthlessly destroyed their marriage just two months ago.
Claire’s faint, arrogant smile disappeared as their eyes met.
"Why is Claire here?" Richard asked. His voice wasn't a shout. It was a quiet, restrained whisper of profound, agonizing betrayal.
The room instantly fell dead silent. A smooth cinematic focus shifted to Richard’s mother, Diane. She stood near the head of the table in a cream-colored satin blouse, holding a large white ceramic bowl of mashed potatoes.
Diane lifted her chin, her fair face twisting into a defensive, self-righteous expression as if her decision was perfectly logical.
