Chapter 7 - The Audio Confession

The audio recording was pristine. Claire’s arrogant, laughing voice echoed from the phone speaker, accompanied by the deep voice of her wealthy lover.

"Did you actually promise to pay off his parents' three-hundred-thousand-dollar foreclosure?" the lover’s voice asked on the recording.

"Are you kidding me?" Claire’s recorded voice laughed coldly, dripping with absolute venom. "The second Richard signs the asset-transfer papers for the company tonight, I am canceling the wire transfer to his mother. I'm not giving those pathetic boomers a single dime."

Diane gasped loudly, physically stumbling backward as if she had been shot.

"They're going to lose their house," the lover chuckled.

"Let the bank take it," Claire’s voice sneered through the speaker. "Diane is so desperate and greedy, she’d sell her own son out for a fake promise. Once the ink is dry on my divorce papers, I am blocking their numbers and letting them rot on the street."

The recording clicked off.

The silence in the driveway was absolute, terrifying, and dripping with imminent, inescapable justice.

Diane stood paralyzed in her cream satin blouse, trembling violently. The devastating, agonizing realization crashed over her. She had completely betrayed her own flesh and blood, destroyed her relationship with her son forever, all for a fraudulent, empty lie.
