Chapter 2 - The Cold Twilight

Richard stood completely motionless in the doorway. His strong jaw tightened, his eyes becoming visibly wet, but he refused to break down. He looked at his father, Gary, who cowardly stared down at his dinner plate. He looked at his older sister, Paige, who nervously avoided his gaze.

"You knew she'd be here?" Richard asked, his voice trembling with quiet disbelief.

Diane adjusted her grip on the white serving bowl, glancing quickly at Claire before looking back at her son. "She's family too, Richard," Diane defended coldly.

Nobody moved. Nobody spoke up for him. The cinematic reality of the moment crashed over Richard with devastating force. He looked at the untouched, empty chair across from Claire.

His expression slowly, powerfully transformed from wounded disbelief into cold, absolute acceptance.

"Then you've made your choice," Richard whispered with heavy, heartbreaking finality.

Richard didn't scream. He didn't flip the table. He slowly turned away from the luxurious dining room and walked deliberately toward the front door. Diane lowered the serving bowl, her confident expression finally collapsing into genuine concern as she realized he was actually leaving.

The front door closed with a quiet, heavy click, shutting Richard out into the cool blue twilight.

He walked down the paved driveway, the crisp autumn air hitting his face. But before he could reach his car, the front door opened again.
