Chapter 3 - The Kitchen Secret

Richard turned around to see Leah, his thirty-year-old younger sister, rushing down the porch steps. She was wearing a dark floral dress, her face pale with panic. She was the only person at the table who had looked at him with genuine sorrow.
"Leah, go back inside," Richard said quietly, unlocking his car doors. "Enjoy your turkey."
"No, you don't understand!" Leah pleaded, grabbing his arm, her eyes darting nervously back toward the house. "You have to know why Mom invited her. It wasn't about staying neutral, Richard. It was about money."
Richard froze, his hand resting on the car door handle. "What money?"
Leah took a shaking breath. "Dad's contracting business didn't just have a slow year. He is completely bankrupt. The bank is going to foreclose on this house in exactly ten days. They owe three hundred thousand dollars, and they have absolutely nothing left."
Richard stared at her, his tactical mind trying to piece the puzzle together.
"Claire came over early today," Leah confessed, tears welling in her eyes. "I overheard them in the kitchen. Claire promised Mom she would write a check tomorrow morning to completely pay off the foreclosure and save the house."
"Why would Claire do that?" Richard asked, his voice hardening.

"Because she wants your tech company," Leah whispered in terror. "She told Mom she would only write the check if the family publicly sided with her tonight, and forced you to sign the divorce asset-transfer papers at the dinner table."
