Chapter 5 - The Mother's Betrayal

Diane looked at her son with absolute, unapologetic entitlement. The elegant matriarch had completely sold her soul to save her luxurious lifestyle.
"Listen to your wife, Richard," Diane ordered, her voice sharp and authoritative in the crisp evening air. "You need to stop being so stubborn. People make mistakes in marriages. You need to be a man, forgive her for the affair, and sign those papers tonight."
Richard looked at his mother, the profound heartbreak finally giving way to absolute, unbreakable resolve.
"You are telling me to sign away the company I built from scratch, to the woman who slept with my investor?" Richard asked quietly. "Just so she'll write you a check for Dad's bankruptcy?"
Diane’s face violently drained of color. She looked at Leah in pure fury, realizing the youngest daughter had exposed the secret.
But Diane didn't back down. The toxic mother doubled down.
"Yes!" Diane shrieked, completely dropping her high-society facade. "We are losing the house, Richard! We are going to be homeless! Claire is willing to save us! If you actually loved your parents, you would sign that folder right now and save our family legacy!"
Claire smirked, a vicious, victorious gleam in her eyes. She thought she had completely cornered him. She thought the emotional pressure of his entire family would break him.
