Chapter 9 - The Final Checkmate

Claire whirled around, hyperventilating. "What did you just say?"

Richard opened the folder, looking at the blank signature line on the asset-transfer document.

"I knew about your extortion plan three days ago, Claire," Richard explained quietly, his voice carrying the unstoppable weight of absolute justice. "So yesterday afternoon, I legally dissolved the tech startup. I transferred every single patent, algorithm, and asset into an irrevocable offshore blind trust. A trust that cannot be touched in a divorce settlement."

Claire’s jaw dropped. She looked like she had just seen the grim reaper.

"The company you are trying to steal doesn't exist anymore," Richard stated flawlessly. "This piece of paper is completely worthless. You get absolutely nothing."

Claire let out a horrific, blood-curdling scream of pure despair. The millions of dollars she had destroyed her marriage to steal had just vanished into thin air.

"You can't do that!" Claire wailed pathetically, dropping to her knees on the cold concrete. "I earned half of that money!"

"You earned exactly what you have right now," Richard replied coldly. "Nothing."

He looked at his mother, who was weeping hysterically by the porch stairs, realizing she had lost her house, her pride, and her son in a single night.
