Chapter 10 - The Table of Peace

Richard turned his back on the screaming, weeping women in the driveway. He didn't look over his shoulder. He opened his car door, started the engine, and drove smoothly away into the cool blue night, completely leaving the toxic, manipulative family behind forever.
He didn't shed a single tear. The heavy, agonizing weight of their betrayal was finally lifted from his shoulders, replaced by the profound, unshakeable peace of absolute freedom.
In the months that followed, Claire’s wealthy lover was indicted for massive corporate fraud, leaving Claire completely broke and entirely alone. Diane and Gary’s house was fully foreclosed on by the bank, forcing them to move into a tiny, rundown apartment, completely abandoned by their high-society friends.
Richard didn't look back.
One year later, a new Thanksgiving evening glowing with warm amber light filled a completely different dining room.
Richard stood at the head of a beautiful, massive table in his own new home. He wasn't wearing a dark navy shirt of mourning; he wore a sharp, comfortable sweater, his face radiating absolute health and happiness. The table was surrounded by loyal friends, trusted colleagues, and his sister Leah, the only family member who had ever told him the truth.

Do you think losing her house was enough justice for Diane's betrayal, or did the cruel mother deserve a harsher punishment for siding with the cheating wife?
