Chapter 1 - SHE’S IN THE COFFIN

Soft daylight poured through the open entrance of the Ashford Funeral Home.
White lilies surrounded a small ivory coffin.
A framed photograph stood beside it.
Sofia Grace Mercer, eight years old, smiling into the camera with two missing front teeth and a yellow ribbon in her hair.
Emma Mercer stood beside the coffin in a black funeral dress.
She had not cried for thirty-seven minutes.
People mistook that for strength.
It was not strength.
It was the body’s refusal to break where strangers could see.
The service was about to begin when suitcase wheels scraped across the marble floor.
Every head turned.
Daniel Mercer entered first.
He wore a pale linen shirt, open at the collar, and carried the bronze skin of someone who had spent the week beneath tropical sun.
Vanessa followed.
Emma’s younger sister wore a white resort dress, oversized sunglasses, and the same deep tan.
They pulled matching suitcases behind them.
For one impossible second, Emma thought grief had created them.
Then Vanessa removed one hand from her suitcase and walked toward the coffin.
“Where is Sofia?”
Emma stepped between them.
Vanessa reached past her.
Emma slapped her once.
The sound cracked through the funeral hall.
Every mourner froze.
Daniel lunged.
He grabbed Emma’s wrist.
She tore free and drove one defensive punch into his chest.
Daniel stumbled backward and crashed onto the marble floor.
Gasps echoed beneath the vaulted ceiling.
Emma looked down at him.
“She’s in the coffin.”
Daniel struggled to breathe.
“Emma... stop!”
Vanessa slowly removed her sunglasses.
Her face changed when she saw the photograph.
The tan, the white dress, the expensive luggage—everything that had made her entrance look arrogant now made it look obscene.
Emma raised her phone.
“Not today.”
The funeral doors opened.
Two detectives walked inside.
Daniel pushed himself up on one elbow.
Vanessa stepped backward, clutching her suitcase handle.
The detectives stopped beside Emma.
“Mrs. Emma?”
Emma lowered the phone.
“Yes.”
Detective Laura Bennett looked toward Daniel and Vanessa.
“We need everyone to remain in the building.”
Daniel’s panic sharpened.

“This is my daughter’s funeral.”
Bennett replied, “That is why we are here.”
