Chapter 15 - THE FIRE

The sprinkler system contained most of the fire.
The waiting room was destroyed.
Sofia’s photograph blackened at the edges.
The yellow ribbon burned completely.
No one was inside.
The arsonist entered through the west wing using a copied fire-inspection badge.
Security footage captured a hooded figure carrying a small fuel container.
At 2:19 a.m., the figure paused before Sofia’s photograph.
Then removed something from the frame.
The silver bracelet.
The same bracelet Daniel had taken after poisoning Sofia.
Emma stood in the wet hallway at dawn.
Smoke stained the ceiling.
Water covered the marble floor where Daniel once fell.
Bennett said, “This was targeted.”
Emma already knew.
A message appeared on the reception wall in black paint:
DEAD CHILDREN DO NOT TESTIFY TWICE.
The words were designed to provoke her.
They succeeded.
Emma wanted Reed found before another family suffered.
But Bennett warned that anger could make her predictable.
“Burke expects you to become the face of the investigation,” she said. “They want every mistake attached to you.”
“Then what do I do?”
“Stop acting like the only person who can carry Sofia’s name.”
The sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
Emma had built the project beside her grief.
Over time, she began treating it as something only she could protect.
That was another form of control, even if born from love.
She called an emergency board meeting.
For the first time, she delegated full operational authority.
Maya agreed to join an advisory committee after recovery.
Independent attorneys took control of current cases.
Security protocols changed.
Emma stepped back from public interviews.
Burke lost its easiest target.
The arson investigation found accelerant residue linked to a maintenance supplier serving Hawthorne Behavioral Center.
Purchase records led to Melissa Crane, the partner-organization director.
She confessed after arrest.
Reed threatened to expose forged grant applications unless she helped him.
She gave him building schedules and access codes.
But she denied setting the fire.
She named the arsonist.
Evan Holloway.
His face was partially visible in enhanced footage.
Maya’s husband had not fled the country.
He remained close, working with Reed.
Why steal Sofia’s bracelet?
Emma believed it was symbolic.
Bennett disagreed.
“Daniel gave it to Vanessa during the trip. What if he hid something inside it?”
The charm was small.
Too small for paper.
But modern storage chips could be almost invisible.
Vanessa remembered Daniel repeatedly touching the yellow flower.
“He said it was worth more than it looked.”
Investigators searched old evidence photographs.
A seam was visible behind the enamel charm.
The bracelet contained a micro-storage device.
Daniel had used it to carry confidential documents out of the house without detection.
Vanessa unknowingly held it for years.
The device might contain Burke’s client list.
Now Reed had it.
Or Evan did.
At noon, Emma received a package with no return address.
Inside was a fresh yellow ribbon.
And a photograph of Vanessa walking out of a grocery store that morning.
