Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN REED COULD NOT ERASE
Lily was not kidnapped.
She staged the disappearance.
Bennett discovered the truth when a bus camera showed her boarding alone.
Lily left the backpack deliberately to make Reed believe she had been taken.
She contacted Emma from a prepaid phone forty-eight hours later.
“I needed him to move,” Lily said.
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“You cannot use yourself as bait.”
“I have been bait since I was fourteen.”
Lily had spent years tracking Reed.
She knew his habits.
When threatened, he returned to the first place he believed he controlled.
Hawthorne had been raided.
His offices were gone.
His rural retreat exposed.
But Claire’s old house remained in Charles Wynn’s name.
Lily believed Reed used a hidden basement there.
Agents searched the property once.
They found nothing.
Lily gave Emma a detail only a child who lived there would know.
The wine cellar wall had a false drain.
Behind it was a service passage leading beneath the neighboring carriage house.
Federal agents returned.
The passage opened into a secure room.
Reed was not there.
But his personal archive was.
Video recordings of clients.
Judicial payments.
Medical templates.
Threat files.
Insurance policies.
Photographs of Emma’s mother.
A bottle of the anticoagulant prescribed before her stroke.
And a recording labeled C.W. FINAL.
Claire appeared on screen, sedated but conscious.
Reed questioned her about the ledger.
She refused to reveal its location.
Charles stood in the corner.
He watched.
The recording ended before her death.
Charles Wynn was charged with Claire’s murder and conspiracy.
He confessed within a day.
Reed administered the overdose.
Charles helped stage the hotel room.
In exchange, Burke secured his control of Lily’s trust.
Emma watched only part of the video.
Lily chose not to watch at all.
“I already know who my mother was,” she said. “I do not need her worst night to prove it.”
The archive confirmed Emma’s mother was targeted.
Reed arranged the false prescription.
But no direct evidence proved he administered it.
One staff nurse at the rehabilitation company had delivered medication to Emma’s mother’s home.
The nurse, Janet Frost, disappeared after the death.
Now seventy, she lived in Arizona under her maiden name.
Bennett located her.
Janet agreed to speak.
She admitted Reed paid her to replace a medication bottle.
She believed the dosage would cause confusion and temporary hospitalization.
When Emma’s mother died, Reed told her silence was the only way to avoid murder charges.
Janet kept quiet for sixteen years.
Her testimony completed the case.
Reed had killed Claire.
He had caused Emma’s mother’s death.
He had enabled Daniel’s poisoning plan.
Three generations of women had been targeted by the same machinery.
Janet also revealed Reed’s current location.
He had contacted her two days earlier.
He wanted money and a vehicle.
They arranged a meeting at a desert motel.
Agents surrounded it.
The room was empty.
On the bed lay Reed’s wallet, passport, and a burner phone.
The shower was running.
Blood stained the sink.
But there was no body.
Then the burner phone rang.
Emma answered on Bennett’s instruction.
