Chapter 8 - VANESSA ON THE STAND
Vanessa testified in a navy suit.
No tan.
No white dress.
No sunglasses.
The prosecutor asked why she began the affair.
She answered:
“Because I was selfish, jealous of my sister, and willing to believe lies that gave me what I wanted.”
Daniel stared at her with contempt.
Vanessa described the trip.
His unexplained absence.
The second phone.
The nervous return before dawn.
The words about the wrong glass.
The promise that “everything would be resolved.”
Daniel’s lawyer attacked her character.
“You betrayed your own sister.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to help take her child.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to police.”
“Yes.”
“And now you expect this jury to believe you?”
Vanessa looked at Emma.
“No. I expect them to compare my testimony with the evidence.”
That was the strongest answer she gave.
Emma did not forgive her.
But she believed that sentence.
The final witness was Dr. Priya Shah, the toxicologist.
She explained how the dosage entered Sofia’s body.
The concentration.
The timing.
The absence of accidental exposure.
Daniel’s lawyer asked whether Emma could have administered it.
Dr. Shah said physically, yes.
Then she added:
“But the timing aligns with the child’s recorded statement, airport evidence, and the father’s presence. Toxicology does not identify a hand. It identifies what the other evidence must explain.”
The jury deliberated for nine hours.
Daniel was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder of Emma, financial conspiracy, evidence tampering, unlawful medication theft, and guardianship fraud.
When the verdict was read, he looked at Emma.
“You did this.”
Emma answered quietly.
“No. Sofia did.”
Her message.
Her monitor.
