Chapter 5 - THE SECOND WILL
Daniel’s financial plan depended on an outdated version of Emma’s estate documents.
Three months earlier, Emma quietly changed her will.
Her attorney recommended it after Daniel repeatedly asked about beneficiary language.
The new structure removed him from control.
If Emma died, Sofia’s inheritance would be managed by an independent fiduciary.
If both died, the rehabilitation company shares transferred to a charitable foundation.
Daniel would receive only the jointly owned home.
He did not know.
But someone did.
The new attorney, Charles Wynn, had sent confirmation to Emma’s private email.
That account was accessed from Daniel’s laptop two days later.
The login records suggested Daniel learned the plan.
If killing Emma no longer guaranteed control, Sofia’s death could pressure Emma into changing the will again—or destroy her emotionally enough for him to seek guardianship over her business interests.
Investigators found draft court papers claiming Emma was mentally unstable.
The documents were prepared before Sofia died.
Daniel had gathered witness statements from employees, relatives, and doctors.
Most statements described grief that had not happened yet.
One paragraph referred to “the devastating death of her daughter” five days before the death occurred.
The date was impossible to explain away.
Daniel planned for Sofia’s death.
He also planned to use it against Emma.
The case shifted.
Sofia was not collateral damage.
She was the target.
The poisoning was designed to appear accidental.
Then Emma would be blamed for poor supervision.
Daniel would portray her as unstable.
He would seek temporary control of the company.
Eventually, he would manipulate or remove her.
Vanessa read the draft petition during a formal interview.
She went pale.
“He told me Emma had already signed treatment papers.”
Bennett asked, “Did he ask you to testify?”
“Yes.”
“To what?”
“That she forgot medications. That she left Sofia alone. That she drank too much.”
“Were those things true?”
“No.”
“Were you willing to say they were?”
Vanessa cried.
“I thought it would help him get custody.”
Emma watched from behind one-way glass.
That sentence broke the last illusion.
