Chapter 6 - THE FUNERAL RECORDING
The funeral home had cameras.
Daniel knew that.
What he did not know was that Emma had arranged a second recording.
The night before the funeral, she met Detective Bennett privately.
They expected Daniel to return.
He had booked a flight under his own name.
He did not know investigators had recovered Sofia’s message.
Emma agreed to let the funeral proceed.
Not to create a spectacle.
To prevent Daniel from fleeing before detectives confirmed his identity and location.
Her phone streamed audio to police the moment she raised it.
The slap was not planned.
Neither was the punch.
Bennett later warned Emma that Daniel could accuse her of assault.
Emma accepted that.
“I hit Vanessa after she reached into my daughter’s coffin. I hit Daniel after he restrained me.”
Witnesses supported her.
No charges were filed.
The recording captured something more valuable.
While Daniel lay on the floor, Vanessa whispered:
You said she took the wrong glass.
Daniel replied:
Shut up.
The words were faint.
But forensic audio specialists recovered them.
Vanessa claimed Daniel told her there had been “a mistake with a drink” after returning to the resort.
He said Emma became sick.
He never mentioned Sofia.
Vanessa had assumed the poisoning targeted Emma.
She stayed silent because she feared becoming implicated.
Her silence ended only after seeing the coffin.
Prosecutors offered cooperation terms.
Vanessa would plead guilty to obstruction, conspiracy to commit guardianship fraud, and perjury preparation.
In exchange, she would testify fully.
Emma did not support or oppose the deal.
It was not hers to decide.
But when Vanessa asked for forgiveness, Emma answered.
“No.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Maybe someday?”
“No.”
