Chapter 20 - ASHFORD FUNERAL HOME

Ashford Funeral Home closed for renovation after the fire.

Only the Sofia Grace Project’s temporary offices remained active.

Reed meant the funeral hall.

The place where Daniel’s story collapsed.

Police evacuated the building.

Emma refused to leave the perimeter.

Bennett stationed her inside a command van.

At 11:43 p.m., motion sensors activated in the coffin room.

Cameras showed no entry.

Then a wall panel moved.

Reed emerged from an old service corridor connecting the embalming wing to the chapel.

The building had passages omitted from modern plans.

Funeral staff once used them to move bodies privately.

Reed entered carrying a metal case.

He placed it beside Sofia’s photograph.

Then sat in the first row.

Bennett sent a tactical team.

Before they entered, Reed called Emma.

“Come inside alone.”

“No.”

“Then the building burns.”

He opened the metal case.

Inside were chemical containers and a trigger device.

Bomb technicians could not confirm whether it was real.

Reed demanded ten minutes.

Emma asked, “Why here?”

“Because this is where you became useful.”

“You mean visible.”

“Same thing.”

Reed believed the funeral confrontation transformed Emma into a public symbol.

He blamed her visibility for Burke’s collapse.

He wanted to end the story at its most recognizable location.

Emma entered wearing a concealed microphone.

Bennett objected.

Emma answered, “He wants control of the image. Give him the image and take the evidence.”

Inside, the hall smelled faintly of smoke and lilies.

Reed sat beneath Sofia’s photograph.

The restored silver bracelet hung from the frame.

“You built a religion around a dead child,” he said.

Emma stood in the aisle.

“I built legal aid.”

“You built power.”

“To give people choices.”

“Choice is a story weak people tell after stronger people decide.”

Emma looked at the trigger.

“You thought that about Claire.”

“She was reckless.”

“My mother?”

“Interfering.”

“Sofia?”

Reed’s face shifted.

“Daniel’s mistake.”

Emma’s voice remained steady.

“You were in the kitchen.”

“I supplied a controlled strategy. He escalated.”

“You gave him poison.”

“I gave him leverage.”

The confession transmitted clearly.

Emma moved closer.

“And now?”

“Now I remove the symbol.”

He pressed the trigger.

Nothing happened.

Bennett’s team had jammed the wireless frequency.

Reed looked down.

Emma kicked the metal case away.

Agents entered.

Reed grabbed her wrist and pulled a small blade from his sleeve.

For one second, the photograph of Sofia stood behind him.

Then Vanessa struck Reed from the side with a fire extinguisher.

She had entered through the west corridor against police orders.

Reed fell.

Agents restrained him.

Emma tore free.

Vanessa stood breathing hard.

“You should not be here,” Emma said.

“I know.”

“You could have been killed.”

“I know.”

Police opened the metal case.

The chemicals were flammable but not configured as a bomb.

The trigger was theater.

Reed’s final weapon was fear.

As officers led him away, he looked at Emma.

“You needed me to become important.”

Emma answered, “No. Sofia made you visible.”

Reed was charged in multiple jurisdictions.

But before trial, he made one request.

He wanted to speak to Emma privately.

May you like

He claimed Daniel had left a final recording.

A recording addressed to Sofia.
