Chapter 21 - DANIEL’S LAST RECORDING
Emma refused the private meeting.
Reed could speak through prosecutors or remain silent.
Two days later, his attorney delivered a storage location.
Inside a rented locker, agents found Daniel’s old laptop and a sealed drive.
The drive contained a video recorded six weeks before Sofia’s death.
Daniel sat in his study.
He looked calm.
He addressed the camera as though speaking to Sofia in the future.
“If you ever see this, it means your mother made everything difficult.”
Emma stopped the video.
Bennett asked whether she wanted to continue.
“Yes.”
Daniel explained that families survived only when one person controlled them.
He said Emma’s inheritance made her arrogant.
He said Sofia would one day understand that fathers had to make hard decisions.
He described a plan to send Emma away for treatment.
He promised Sofia they would live together afterward.
Then he said:
“If you help Daddy by drinking what I give you and telling the doctors Mommy gave it to you, we can fix our family.”
The original plan required Sofia to survive and falsely accuse Emma.
Daniel intended to give a smaller dose.
But after Sofia resisted and threatened to tell Emma he had returned, he increased it.
The murder grew from a failed attempt to recruit his child into the lie.
Emma wept without sound.
For years, she believed Sofia trusted Daniel until the end.
The video revealed Sofia resisted.
She said no.
She asked for her mother.
She threatened truth.
Her final voice message was not accidental.
It was an attempt to warn Emma.
Sofia had understood more than anyone knew.
The drive also contained deleted audio from the kitchen.
Sofia asked:
“Why are you lying about Mommy?”
Daniel replied:
“Because she is sick.”
Sofia said:
“She isn’t. You are.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Eight years old.
Afraid.
Still clear.
The prosecution added attempted witness manipulation and child coercion to Daniel’s record, though his life sentence could not meaningfully increase.
Reed’s defense argued the recording proved Daniel acted independently.
Prosecutors answered that Reed built the plan and supplied the tools.
Both could be guilty.
At Reed’s trial, Emma did not testify about every loss.
She focused on the structure.
The forms.
The payments.
The medical lies.
The repeated language.
Maya testified.
Lily testified.
Janet testified.
Vanessa testified again.
This time, no deal reduced her sentence.
She had already served it.
She testified because the truth required no reward.
Reed was convicted of racketeering, conspiracy, attempted poisoning, kidnapping, medical fraud, obstruction, Claire Wynn’s murder, and crimes connected to Emma’s mother.
The jury also convicted him for his role in Daniel’s plan.
He received consecutive life sentences.
As he was removed, he did not look at Emma.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You always were useful,” he said.
Vanessa answered, “Not to you anymore.”
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Emma ignored them.
She walked with Maya, Lily, Bennett, and Vanessa toward the street.
For the first time, the women were not arranged around a defendant.
They were simply leaving together.
