Daniel refused a plea agreement.
He claimed Emma poisoned Sofia and framed him.
His defense attorney introduced evidence of Emma’s grief medication, therapy appointments, and prior anxiety.
They argued she had become obsessed with the affair.
They suggested she discovered it before the trip and retaliated against Sofia to punish Daniel.
The theory was horrifying.
It was also strategically predictable.
The prosecution presented timelines.
Daniel’s secret airport return.
The nursing home medication.
The locked drawer.
The dosage chart.
The draft guardianship petition written before Sofia’s death.
Vanessa’s messages.
The funeral recording.
Then came the kitchen camera.
Daniel had disabled the Mercer home security system the night he returned.
But Sofia’s bedroom monitor uploaded automatically to a cloud account.
The monitor was meant for nighttime breathing alerts.
It captured audio from the hallway.
At 10:16 p.m., Daniel’s voice said:
Drink this for Daddy.
Sofia answered:
It tastes funny.
Daniel said:
Finish it. Don’t tell Mommy. It’s our surprise.
The recording stopped when the monitor lost power.
Someone unplugged it.
Emma left the courtroom.
She could not hear more.
In the hallway, Bennett sat beside her.
Neither spoke.
Inside, Daniel’s defense changed again.
He admitted returning.
He admitted giving Sofia liquid.
But claimed it was vitamins.
He said someone else contaminated the bottle.
