Chapter 16 - THE EXCHANGE

Emma refused to bring Vanessa.

Bennett refused to let Emma go.

Vanessa insisted on both.

“This started because of information I gave them,” she said. “If they want me, use me.”

Emma looked at her sister across the damaged intake room.

“You still think sacrifice erases responsibility.”

“No. I think responsibility sometimes means standing where the consequences are.”

It was the closest Vanessa had come to understanding.

The exchange location arrived through an encrypted message.

An abandoned courthouse annex forty miles outside the city.

Reed demanded Vanessa enter alone carrying a phone with no police software.

In return, he would provide the bracelet.

Federal agents prepared surveillance.

Vanessa wore a concealed transmitter stitched into her coat.

Emma remained in a command vehicle.

At 8:06 p.m., Vanessa entered the annex.

Reed’s voice came through the transmitter.

“You always were the useful sister.”

Vanessa answered, “Where is the bracelet?”

“Why does Emma want it?”

“Because it belonged to Sofia.”

“Sentiment is expensive.”

A second voice entered.

Evan Holloway.

He accused Vanessa of helping destroy men whose wives used children as weapons.

Vanessa said, “Daniel murdered a child.”

Evan replied, “Daniel lost discipline.”

Not morality.

Discipline.

The network viewed murder as a procedural failure.

Reed ordered Vanessa to sit.

He wanted a recorded statement claiming Emma coerced her trial testimony.

Vanessa began reading from his prepared script.

Then stopped.

“This is not what happened.”

Reed’s voice hardened.

“Read it.”

“No.”

“You betrayed Emma once. Betrayal becomes easier with practice.”

Vanessa answered, “That is why I know what it costs.”

Agents moved when the transmitter captured a struggle.

Inside, Evan held Vanessa at gunpoint.

Reed stood behind a table with the bracelet.

He threatened to destroy it in a metal press.

Bennett entered from the east corridor.

Emma watched through a tactical camera.

Evan dragged Vanessa toward a side exit.

Reed ran.

Agents pursued him.

A gunshot sounded.

The transmitter went silent.

Emma left the command vehicle despite orders.

She reached the annex doorway as medics surrounded Vanessa.

Blood covered her shoulder.

Alive.

The bullet passed through soft tissue.

Evan had been shot in the leg and arrested.

Reed escaped through an underground records tunnel built decades earlier.

The bracelet remained on the table.

Its storage chip was intact.

At the hospital, Vanessa woke and asked one question.

“Did you get it?”

Emma nodded.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“I’m asking whether Sofia’s evidence matters.”

“It matters.”

“Then that is enough.”

Emma sat beside her sister until morning.

Not forgiveness.

Not reconciliation.

Presence.

The chip contained hundreds of confidential files.

Judges.

Doctors.

Private investigators.

Attorneys.

Corporate clients.

And one encrypted folder labeled SG-2.

Investigators assumed SG meant Sofia Grace.

Emma entered Sofia’s birthday as a password.

The folder opened.

Inside was a video recorded the night Sofia died.

Daniel stood in the Mercer kitchen.

He was not alone.

Malcolm Reed was beside him.
