Chapter 4 - THE AFFAIR
The affair began eleven months earlier.
Vanessa claimed Daniel told her the marriage was over.
He said Emma refused intimacy.
He said she used Sofia to control him.
He said he stayed only because leaving would destroy the child.
Every sentence was built from familiar pieces.
Emma had heard them in reverse.
Daniel told her Vanessa was jealous.
Unstable.
Always trying to compete.
He said Emma should stop discussing private marriage problems with her sister.
He isolated both women while making each believe the other was dangerous.
Vanessa did not deny responsibility.
“I knew he was married.”
“You knew he was my husband.”
“Yes.”
“You slept with him anyway.”
“Yes.”
Emma’s restraint frightened Vanessa more than shouting would have.
“Why did you come today?”
“Daniel said Sofia was at a school retreat.”
Emma closed her eyes.
“He brought you to the funeral home and you still believed him?”
“He said we were meeting a lawyer here. He said you were staging something.”
Emma looked toward the coffin room.
“And when you saw the flowers?”
“I thought it was another family’s service.”
“When you saw Sofia’s photograph?”
Vanessa broke.
She covered her mouth and bent forward.
Emma did not comfort her.
Grief did not erase betrayal.
But betrayal did not make Vanessa a murderer.
The detectives examined Vanessa’s phone after obtaining a warrant.
Deleted messages showed Daniel had instructed her to use a new number.
He paid for the trip.
He selected the matching suitcases.
He told her to wear white because “the meeting would be at a coastal property.”
He also sent one message the morning after Sofia died.
Everything is resolved. Come home with me and do exactly what I say.
Vanessa replied:
What happened?
Daniel answered:
Nothing you need to know.
The affair was not the central crime.
It was camouflage.
Daniel used it to create an alibi and a future partner he believed he could control.
Emma asked Vanessa one final question.
“Did he ever mention my life insurance?”
Vanessa looked up.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The first night of the trip.”
