Chapter 9 - SENTENCING
Daniel received life without parole.
At sentencing, he refused responsibility.
He blamed Vanessa.
He blamed Emma’s mother’s estate plan.
He blamed financial pressure.
He blamed Sofia for drinking what he gave her.
That final statement changed the room.
Even his attorney looked away.
Emma read a victim impact statement.
She did not call Daniel a monster.
She described Sofia.
How she sang to the refrigerator when waiting for it to dispense ice.
How she apologized to insects before moving them outside.
How she wore mismatched socks because she believed pairs became lonely when always kept together.
How she trusted her father when he told her to drink.
“You did not only end her life,” Emma said. “You used her trust as the weapon.”
Vanessa was sentenced later.
She received four years, followed by supervised release.
The judge cited her cooperation but condemned her willingness to help fabricate evidence against Emma.
Before being taken away, Vanessa asked to speak.
“I loved Sofia.”
Emma looked at her.
“You loved being loved by her. That is not the same as protecting her.”
Vanessa began crying.
Emma left.
The rehabilitation company survived.
Emma removed every family member from management roles.
She created independent oversight for all trusts and medical decisions.
No spouse could control a beneficiary’s care without outside review.
No guardianship petition could be funded by the company.
She established the Sofia Grace Project to provide attorneys for parents targeted through fraudulent incapacity claims.
People praised Emma for turning tragedy into purpose.
She disliked the phrase.
Tragedy had not transformed into something good.
