Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Protection

Dante walked slowly back into the opulent study. Elena was sitting on the leather sofa, clutching Lucia to her chest. She was shaking like a leaf, fully expecting Dante’s men to come in and silence them for witnessing the hit.

Instead, Dante walked over to his heavy mahogany desk. He pulled open a drawer and took out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills, placing it gently on the coffee table in front of Elena.

"Mr. Dante, I..." Elena started, completely overwhelmed.

"Your daughter saved my life today, Elena," Dante interrupted gently, the lethal mafia boss entirely replaced by a man of deep gratitude. "If she hadn't been brave enough to step forward, I would be dead on this floor."

He knelt down again, looking directly at little Lucia, who was still holding her stuffed lamb. He offered the little girl a rare, genuine smile.

"You are no longer just an employee in this house, Elena," Dante declared, his voice filled with absolute conviction. "From this day forward, you and your daughter are under the permanent protection of my family. You will have a new home on the estate grounds, a full security detail, and Lucia’s education will be paid for until she graduates college. No one in this city will ever lay a hand on either of you."

Elena burst into tears of pure relief and joy, hugging her daughter tightly. Because of one toddler's incredible bravery, they had gone from vulnerable servants to untouchable members of the most powerful family in the city.

If you saw someone poisoning a powerful person's drink, would you risk your own life to warn them?
