Chapter 3 - The Blurred Figure

The silence that followed Lucia’s words was absolute and terrifying. Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. Her mind raced, desperately trying to process what her three-year-old daughter had just said. Yucky?

Dante’s incredibly calm demeanor vanished in a fraction of a second. The gentle, curious man was gone, instantly replaced by the lethal, calculating predator that ran the city's underworld. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he looked from the dark, bubbling coffee on the marble to the innocent child in front of him.

"What lady, Lucia?" Dante asked, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper that sent shivers down Elena’s spine.

Lucia raised a small, trembling finger. She pointed past Dante, past the American flag standing in the corner of the study, directly out the open double doors and down the long, sprawling hallway.

"Her," Lucia stammered.

Through the doorway, in the distant background, a blurred figure was quickly walking away. It was Colette, the estate’s head cook, wearing her crisp black-and-white chef’s uniform. She was moving fast, looking nervously over her shoulder.

"She had a little bottle," Lucia added, burying her face into her mother's grey dress.

Elena’s face went entirely pale. She tightly gripped Lucia’s shoulders, staring at the shattered cup on the floor.
