Chapter 7 - The Poison Test

Colette let out a massive sigh of relief, thinking she had just outsmarted the city’s most dangerous man. "Thank you, sir. I swear on my life, I am loyal only to you. Let me go to the study and deal with that lying maid right now."
"No," Dante said.
He walked over to the expensive espresso machine. Resting on the warming plate was the small, silver carafe containing the rest of the batch of coffee Colette had just brewed for him. Dante picked it up. He grabbed a clean ceramic mug from the rack and slowly poured the steaming dark liquid into it.
He slid the full mug across the marble island. It stopped directly in front of Colette.
"If Elena is lying, and you are innocent," Dante said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper, "then drink this."
Colette stared at the steaming black coffee. A single drop of sweat rolled down the side of her face. The kitchen was dead silent. She knew exactly what was inside that batch. It was a fast-acting, untraceable neurotoxin. One sip would shut down her organs in less than three minutes.
"Sir, I... I don't drink coffee," Colette stammered, backing away from the counter, her voice trembling violently. "It gives me palpitations."
