Chapter 2 - The Toddler's Warning

Elena’s heart slammed violently against her ribs. She grabbed Lucia by the arm, trying to pull the little girl behind her back. "I am so sorry, Mr. Dante!" Elena sobbed, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she knelt in the spilled coffee. "She got away from me! I’ll clean it immediately! Please, forgive her, she’s just a baby!"

Dante didn't even look at the mess on the floor. His sharp, dark eyes, framed by silvering temples, slowly shifted from the shattered porcelain to the terrified little girl in the pink dress. The air in the study grew dangerously cold.

"Wait," Dante said.

His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It was quiet, authoritative, and carried a weight that made the entire room stop spinning.

Dante slowly stepped out from behind his imposing desk. He adjusted his tailored dark suit and crouched down, bringing himself entirely to Lucia’s eye level. Elena knelt protectively behind her daughter, holding her breath, terrified he was going to punish them.

Instead, Dante looked at the toddler with an unsettling, intense calm. "Why did you do that, little one?"

Lucia gripped her stuffed lamb tighter. Her bottom lip quivered, but she bravely looked the towering mafia boss right in the eye.
