Chapter 6 - The Vicious Lie

Panic exploded in Colette’s eyes, but she was a trained operative for a rival family. She wasn't going to go down without a fight. She immediately slammed the towel down onto the granite counter and let out a loud, theatrical scoff.
"Are you joking, sir?" Colette cried out, feigning absolute outrage. "You’re going to believe a toddler? A stupid, illiterate child?!"
Dante’s jaw clenched, but he let her dig her own grave.
"It’s Elena!" Colette screamed, pacing the kitchen and pointing an accusing finger toward the hallway. "That pathetic little maid has been jealous of my salary since the day she started working here! She’s trying to frame me! She told her brat to spill your coffee and make up a story about a bottle so you would fire me!"
Colette stepped closer to Dante, trying to look desperate and loyal. "Think about it, sir! Why would I hurt you? I’ve cooked for you for three years! Elena is a rat. She’s probably the one working for the Maroni family! You need to interrogate her, not me!"
Colette was incredibly convincing. For a moment, the heavy silence in the kitchen made it seem like Dante was actually weighing her words. He looked down at the floor, processing the vicious accusation against the young mother and her child.
