Chapter 2 - The Silent Coward

The cinematic realism of the heavy, paralyzing tension completely electrified the dining room.
A medium close-up captured Christa. She didn't look embarrassed by her cruelty. She glanced toward the dining table, where her own parents, Gerald and Elaine, were comfortably seated in their Sunday best. They were watching the cruel exchange with smug, satisfied smiles.
Christa turned back to Dorothy, her eyes flashing with venomous authority.
"Don't make this awkward, Dorothy," Christa hissed sharply, dropping her voice to a toxic whisper. "My parents drove an hour to be here. I am not having you ruin this evening by sitting at my table in those cheap clothes. Go to the kitchen, find some leftovers, and stay out of sight until they leave."
Dorothy looked back at Owen. She had sacrificed her entire life for her son. She had worked double shifts for twenty years as a widow just to put him through college. And right now, Owen was staring at his shoes, refusing to defend his mother in her own home.
A tight close-up focused entirely on Dorothy’s face. She didn't scream. She didn't burst into dramatic tears.
The soft, warm maternal affection in her eyes instantly vanished, violently replaced by a mask of cold, unbreakable, and absolute dignity. She adjusted her grip on the heavy roasting pan without setting it down.

"Then I'll take my dinner home," Dorothy whispered smoothly, her voice completely devoid of human warmth.
👉 Dorothy turned around, preparing to leave the ungrateful monsters entirely empty-handed.
