Chapter 3 - The Empty Table

A wide cinematic shot captured the breathtaking, devastating moment.

Dorothy turned her back on her cruel daughter-in-law. She didn't walk back into the kitchen to put the food down. Still wearing the thick oven mitts, she carried the massive, steaming twelve-pound ham directly toward the front hallway.

Owen finally looked up, sheer, unadulterated panic washing over his face as he realized his mother was literally walking out the front door with the main course of the dinner party.

Christa stepped aside, her confident, arrogant expression rapidly fading into absolute confusion. She expected the older woman to cry, to beg, or to quietly submit and hide in the kitchen like a beaten dog.

The heavy front door clicked open, and Dorothy walked out into the cool evening air.

The heavy door slammed shut with a resounding, permanent thud.

The chaotic, toxic energy instantly shifted. The dining room was plunged into a dead, suffocating silence. Christa stood frozen, staring at the empty space at the absolute center of the meticulously arranged dining table.

"Where is the food?" Elaine, Christa’s arrogant mother, asked from the table, her fork hovering in mid-air. "We've been waiting for an hour."

"She... she took it," Christa stammered, completely humiliated.

👉 Owen threw the front door open, entirely unaware that the missing ham was the absolute least of his problems.
