Chapter 4 - The Driveway Defiance

Owen sprinted down the driveway, his navy polo shirt clinging to his back in a cold sweat.
Dorothy was already at the end of the driveway, gently placing the heavy roasting pan into the trunk of her modest sedan. She closed the trunk just as Owen frantically reached her.
"Mom, what are you doing?!" Owen hissed aggressively, completely abandoning his passive persona. "You can't just leave! You're humiliating us in front of Christa's parents! Bring the food back inside right now!"
Dorothy didn't flinch. She slowly pulled off her thick oven mitts, tossing them onto the passenger seat. She turned around and looked at her son with profound, unfiltered disgust.
"I'm not humiliating you, Owen," Dorothy stated clinically, completely devoid of mercy. "You humiliated yourself the second you let your wife treat me like a stray dog in my own home."
"It is her house, Mom!" Owen whined pathetically, throwing his hands in the air. "She wanted a perfect dinner for her parents! Why do you always have to make everything about you? Just apologize and come back inside!"
Dorothy physically stopped breathing. The cool evening air suddenly felt incredibly heavy.
Her own son had just defended the monster who abused her.
