Chapter 6 - The Notice to Vacate

"No! That's impossible!" Owen shrieked wildly, desperately trying to grab the deed from his mother's hand. "We pay half the mortgage! You told us it was a joint investment!"

"I told you it was a family home," Dorothy corrected coldly, stepping back to protect the document. "But families don't banish their mothers to the kitchen to eat scraps out of the refrigerator."

The front door of the house violently swung open again.

Christa marched out onto the driveway, completely furious. "Owen! What is taking so long?! Tell her to give us the ham and get off our property! My parents are starving!"

"It's not our property, Christa!" Owen wailed hysterically, turning to his arrogant wife with tears of pure, unadulterated panic flooding his eyes. "She owns the house! She's the only one on the deed!"

Christa completely froze. The arrogant, dismissive sneer instantly vanished from her face. She looked at the legal document in Dorothy’s hand, sheer, breathless terror washing over her elegant features.

"You're lying!" Christa screamed, her beige blouse wrinkling as she completely lost her mind. "I decorated that entire house! It's mine!"

"You decorated my house," Dorothy stated clinically, looking at the toxic woman with absolute, crushing authority.

Dorothy reached back into her purse. She pulled out a crisp, white envelope and handed it directly to her weeping son.
