Chapter 11 - the silent aftermath

The grand luxury ballroom slowly emptied, the elite guests whispering feverishly about the breathtaking spectacle they had just witnessed. The music stopped, and the crystal chandeliers seemed to shine a little colder over the remaining empty tables.
Silas remained in his heavy gold chair, the three-million-dollar diamond ring burning a hole in his tailored pocket. The betrayal stung, not because he loved Veronica, but because he had allowed a treacherous parasite so close to the center of his massive, highly guarded empire.
He pulled a secure, encrypted phone from his jacket and dialed a number. The line connected instantly.
"Marcus," Silas said, his voice dropping back into the terrifying, lethal register of the apex predator. "Veronica is gone. The Petrov syndicate will handle her debt. But I want a full sweep of her apartment, her digital files, and her offshore accounts. If she stole anything else, I want it recovered by dawn."
"Consider it done, Boss," Marcus replied smoothly, the loyalty in his voice absolute.
Silas hung up. He looked across the empty ballroom, his dark, tattooed neck flexing as he prepared for the inevitable fallout. A public execution of an engagement meant weakness to his enemies. The sharks would smell the blood in the water.
