Chapter 6 - The Devastating Translation

"Translate it," Silas repeated, his dark eyes leaving absolutely no room for refusal.
Elena swallowed her fear. She looked from the frantic, desperate deaf waiter, up to the towering mafia boss, and finally, she looked directly at the screaming woman in the red off-the-shoulder gown.
"He says..." Elena started, her voice nervous and quiet, yet echoing loudly in the dead silence of the ballroom. "He says he didn't steal it, sir. He says he saw her hide it."
Veronica let out a dramatic, breathless scoff, her eyes darting around the room to see who was believing the lie. "That is absurd! Where would I even hide a three-million-dollar diamond?!"
Elena took a slow, deep breath, delivering the final, devastating translation.
"He says it's inside her glove."
A collective, massive gasp rippled through the hundreds of formal guests. The silence that followed was so heavy it felt as though the oxygen had been completely sucked out of the grand ballroom.
Veronica’s face violently drained of all color. The haughty, arrogant socialite suddenly looked like a cornered rat. She gasped loudly, her hands flying up to clutch her chest in a defensive, panicked posture.
