Chapter 2 - The Helpless Target

The silence in the grand ballroom was agonizingly thick. Hundreds of wealthy guests stared at the commotion, their expensive champagne glasses hovering in mid-air.
Veronica’s chest heaved aggressively beneath her red evening gown. She leaned forward, her red silk gloves resting on the pristine white tablecloth as she glared daggers at the young, deaf waiter.
"I took it off to wash my hands in the powder room," Veronica lied loudly, ensuring every single millionaire in the room could hear her fabricated victimhood. "This filthy little rat bumped into me in the hallway. He picked my pocket! That was a three-million-dollar flawless diamond! Call the police immediately and have him strip-searched!"
The young waiter’s eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror. He couldn't hear the specific words she was screaming, but he could read the hostile, violent body language of the crowd turning against him. He raised his hands, desperately trying to sign his innocence, but his fingers were shaking too hard. He knew that in a room full of billionaires and cartel bosses, a disabled waiter accused of theft wouldn't just be fired—he would likely be killed.
Elena, the waitress standing between them in her classic black and white uniform, put her hands up defensively.
"Ma'am, please, there must be a mistake," Elena pleaded, her voice trembling but resolute. "Leo is deaf. He doesn't understand what you're saying, but I promise you he is not a thief. He has worked here for three years without a single complaint."
