Chapter 8 - The Red Silk Unravels

"I am not asking you a second time, Veronica," Silas whispered, his voice vibrating with a dark, demonic promise. "Take off the red glove, or my men will hold you down and cut it off your arm."
The sheer terror in his voice broke her entirely.
Trembling violently, sobbing in front of the city's most elite politicians and rival bosses, Veronica slowly reached her right hand over to her left arm.
The entire ballroom watched in breathless, agonizing suspense.
With agonizing slowness, she pinched the edge of the luxurious red silk near her elbow. She began to pull it down. The silk slid smoothly over her skin, pooling around her wrist, and finally slipping completely off her trembling hand.
Clack.
A massive, heavy object fell from the crumpled red silk. It hit the pristine white tablecloth and rolled directly into the center of the table, stopping right in front of Silas’s crystal water glass.
It was the flawless, three-million-dollar diamond engagement ring.
The gasp that echoed through the room this time wasn't shock—it was absolute, pure disgust. The elegant socialite hadn't just been caught in a lie; she had been caught attempting to destroy an innocent, disabled man's life just to cover her own pathetic greed.

Veronica collapsed back into her heavy gold chair, burying her face in her bare hands, weeping hysterically as her entire universe was completely, violently vaporized.
