Chapter 10 - The Unconquered Shield

Hours later, the sun dipped below the Pacific horizon, casting a brilliant orange and purple glow over the Coronado coastline.
Ryan sat alone on the edge of his barracks bunk, staring down at the gold Trident gleaming on his crisp white uniform. The celebration was over. The family dinner had been canceled because his mother was too humiliated to leave her hotel room, and the friends had all quietly dispersed.
He pulled out his phone, hovering over Emily’s contact name. His thumb trembled over the screen. He wanted to call her, to apologize, to beg for forgiveness.
But as he looked at the screen, a text notification popped up from an unknown secure military relay: “Transfer complete. Your rent, car payments, and tuition liabilities have been reassigned to your personal account. You are on your own now, Seaman Carter. Earn your uniform.”
Ryan stared at the words, a cold knot tightening in his stomach. She hadn't just walked away from the ceremony; she had officially cut the cord. She had given him the tools to become a SEAL, but she was no longer going to carry him through life.
Far away in a secure Washington D.C. command center, Captain Emily Carter stood before a bank of glowing monitors, her narrow silver watch catching the blue light as she calmly authorized a critical national security directive.

She had made her brother a warrior. Now, it was time for him to survive on his own.
If you were Emily, after years of financial and emotional sacrifice, would you have cut your ungrateful family off completely like she did, or would you have given them one more chance?
