Chapter 15 - the belated letter

Night fell on the Coronado barracks; Ryan sat quietly by his small desk under the dim light of a fluorescent lamp. He pulled out a piece of white paper and a fountain pen. It was time for him to face his mistakes.

He didn't try to call or look for Emily, because he knew he didn't have the right. Instead, he wrote a handwritten letter, pouring into it all the remorse and belated gratitude he had owed his sister for years.

"Emily, I'm sorry," Ryan wrote. "I was blind and ungrateful. I used your sacrifices as a stepping stone for my own arrogance. Now, having to stand on my own two feet, I finally understand how hard you worked."

Ryan wrote about the grueling training, the isolation, and how he was striving every day to become a true soldier, worthy of the Trident badge she had saved for him.

He carefully folded the letter and sent it through the internal military mail, hoping that one day, at some secret base, Emily would read it. This wasn't a plea for help, but the promise of a man.
