Chapter 4 - The March Across the Tent

Commander Hayes didn't say a word.
He slowly stepped away from the podium, his heavy military boots striking the wooden stage with a crisp, rhythmic cadence. He descended the steps, walking with purpose straight down the main aisle toward the family seating section.
Directly behind him marched two senior Master Chief Petty Officers, their chests glittering with rows of combat ribbons, moving in absolute synchronization with their commander.
Ryan’s expression instantly morphed from arrogant pride into sheer, suffocating confusion. He leaned over to his mother. "Mom... why is the commander walking down here? Did I do something wrong?"
Their mother’s face drained of color. She nervously clutched her pearls, whispering, "I-I don't know... maybe he's coming to congratulate our family personally!"
The wealthy family friends gasped, pulling out their smartphones to record what they assumed was going to be a VIP shoutout for Ryan.
Hayes bypassed Ryan entirely. He walked past the front row, past the mother, and stopped dead in front of Emily Carter’s simple black dress.
The three senior officers towered over her seated figure.

Emily slowly raised her head, her calm, exhausted eyes meeting the commander's intense gaze without a single trace of fear or intimidation.
👉 Ryan and his mother held their breath, completely unprepared for the earth-shattering words that were about to leave the commander's lips.
