Chapter 2 - The Unbroken Silence

The security guard took one look at the mother’s pearl necklace and the high-society status she projected, then glanced awkwardly at Emily. Recognizing the ugly family dynamic for what it was, the guard shook his head, stepped back, and left Emily alone in her isolated seat.

Emily didn't look up. Her hands remained neatly folded in her lap over her narrow silver watch.

Growing up, Emily had sacrificed everything so Ryan could attend the best schools, clear his legal debts, and pursue his dream of entering the military. She had worked seventy-hour weeks, taking on grueling, classified contracts that kept her away from home for months at a time. She had sent every spare dollar she earned straight to her family, letting them believe she was just a regular corporate consultant so they wouldn't worry.

And how did they repay her? By treating her like an unwanted beggar because she arrived exhausted, wearing a simple black dress instead of a designer outfit that matched their shallow social standing.

Ryan rejoined their mother and a group of wealthy family friends, laughing loudly, completely ignoring the sister who had paid his tuition.

Up at the podium, Commander Nathaniel Hayes stepped up to deliver the final closing remarks of the graduation ceremony.
