Chapter 3 - The Frozen Podium

Commander Hayes adjusted his cap, his notes resting on the wooden podium. He began to speak, his deep, resonant voice carrying effortlessly through the large outdoor military tent.

"Today, we honor those who have endured Hell Week, who have pushed past the limits of human endurance to earn the Trident," Commander Hayes commanded, his eyes sweeping over the graduates.

Suddenly, the commander stopped speaking mid-sentence.

His mouth remained slightly open, but the powerful voice cut off instantly. The sudden silence rippled through the tent. Graduates and families shifted uncomfortably, wondering why the highest-ranking officer on the base had frozen.

Hayes’s sharp eyes didn't look at the graduates. They moved slowly, deliberately across the family section, bypassing the wealthy donors, the politicians, and the proud parents.

His gaze locked directly onto the third row.

Right onto Emily Carter.

Hayes’s eyes narrowed slightly as he recognized her face, then tracked downward. His gaze swept past her folded hands to the empty, reserved chair sitting directly beside the stage—a chair that had been cordoned off with high-level military clearance tape since dawn, meant for a very specific, highly classified guest of honor who had yet to check in.

👉 The entire tent grew dead silent, and Ryan’s proud smile slowly began to falter as he noticed where the commander was looking.
