Chapter 13 - the lesson on the training ground

On the simulated training ground full of mud and barbed wire, Ryan was undergoing the most grueling survival training. With no more favors or special letters of recommendation, he had to rely entirely on himself.
Every time he stumbled or lost his strength, no one reached out a hand to help. The training officer, the Master Chief, always watched him with cold, challenging eyes. "Get up, Carter! No Colonel is here to save you!"
That mockery was like a knife piercing through Ryan's pride. He gritted his teeth, his bulging muscles aching and exhausted, but he absolutely refused to quit. For the first time, he used his own true strength to crawl through the mud.
At the end of the exercise, Ryan collapsed on the ground exhausted, panting heavily. The Master Chief walked over and tossed him a bottle of cold water. "You did pretty well today. At least you've started to understand what the blood and sweat of a soldier feels like."
That brief compliment caught Ryan by surprise. He realized that respect didn't come from a handed-down badge, but from relentless effort. The thorny process of growing up had truly begun.
