Chapter 8 - The Echo of Ingratitude

Back in the seating area, the atmosphere had shifted from celebratory pride to suffocating mortification.
Guests who had cheered for Ryan minutes ago now avoided eye contact with him and his mother. The social status they had tried so desperately to project had evaporated the second Commander Hayes uttered her true rank.
Ryan staggered toward his mother, his face burning red with humiliation. "Mom... why didn't she tell us? Why didn't she say she was a Captain?"
"She... she never talked about her work," the mother sobbed, her mascara running down her cheeks, her pearls catching the harsh California sun. "She just sent money... she always just sent money and never asked for anything..."
"Because she was protecting you," a cold voice interrupted.
It was one of Ryan’s commanding officers from the training platoon, an older, scarred Master Chief who had walked over to them. He looked at Ryan with utter disgust.
"You think you earned that Trident because you're tough, Carter?" the Master Chief sneered quietly. "Your sister personally signed off on your security waivers every time you messed up during BUD/S. She kept your record clean when half a dozen instructors were ready to wash you out for arrogance. You aren't a SEAL because you're special, kid. You're a SEAL because a Navy Captain kept you from failing out."
