Chapter 16 - the price of vanity

Six months later, the Carter family's situation had hit rock bottom. With no more financial support, the luxury mansion was foreclosed on by the bank. The extravagant parties were forever a thing of the past.
Mrs. Carter, the woman who used to be draped in expensive jewelry, now had to move into a tiny, cramped apartment in the suburbs. The high-society friends she used to associate with had completely turned their backs on her.
For the first time in her life, she had to go look for a part-time job at a grocery store to make ends meet. The humiliation and shame ate away at her soul every time she recalled the moment she shooed Emily away at the graduation ceremony.
Toxic pride had burned her own family to the ground. She now realized that blood ties and Emily's silent sacrifices were the most precious gifts, but she had knocked them over with her own hands for delusional vanity.
Every night, in her cramped room, she sat crying alone, clutching old photographs. The regret came too late. The chance to make things right never exists when the wounds are carved too deeply into the heart of the one mistreated.
