Chapter 1 - The Anniversary Toast

The warm, golden light from the crystal chandeliers bathed the elegant private dining room at The Capital Grille in Charlotte. Fifty formally dressed guests sat around immaculate white tablecloths, their conversations a low, joyful hum. It was supposed to be a celebration of forty years of marriage. Instead, the air in the room was about to be sucked out entirely.

Julia Bennett sat at the head of the main table. In her early sixties, with softly styled silver-brown hair, she was a vision of absolute elegance in a navy evening dress and classic pearl earrings. In front of her sat a perfectly cooked plate of prime rib. She looked entirely composed, radiating a quiet, unshakeable self-assurance.

Beside her stood her husband, Robert. In his mid-sixties, with neatly combed gray hair, a tailored charcoal suit, and a crisp white shirt, he looked every bit the powerful patriarch. He held a crystal champagne flute high in the air, clinking a silver spoon against it to demand the room's attention.

The fifty guests fell silent, turning their faces toward Robert, expecting a tearful tribute to his beautiful wife.

Instead, Robert didn't look at Julia. He gestured his champagne flute toward a nearby table. Sitting there was Amber—a striking woman in her early forties with sleek blonde hair and a tailored emerald dress. She wore a sickeningly expectant, smug smile.

"I’d like to make a toast," Robert announced, his voice booming over the quiet room. He looked down at Julia with eyes as cold as ice. "Our marriage is over. I’m leaving you for Amber."
