Chapter 6 - The Gold Pen

The fifty guests watched in breathless, agonizing suspense. They all thought Julia was in shock, blindly agreeing to a divorce settlement out of pure grief.
Julia wiped her mouth one more time. She reached into her elegant navy clutch and pulled out a heavy, gold-plated fountain pen.
"You really want to do this tonight, Robert?" Julia asked. Her silver-brown hair caught the warm light of the chandeliers. Her natural micro-expressions were so tightly controlled, it was impossible to read her mind. "Once I sign this, there is absolutely no going back. We are entirely disconnected. Financially and legally."
"That is exactly what I want," Robert sneered, squeezing Amber’s waist. "Sign the paper, Julia. Let’s stop pretending this marriage wasn't dead ten years ago."
Julia didn't hesitate. Without a single tear, she pressed the gold pen to the thick parchment and signed her name in flowing, elegant cursive.
Robert let out a massive, booming laugh of pure victory. He snatched the paper off the table, holding it up like a trophy. He had done it. He had ruined his wife and escaped federal prison all in one brilliant stroke.
