Chapter 3 - The Cowardly Son

Without another word, Julia set her napkin back on her lap. She picked up her heavy silver knife and fork, and with slow, precise movements, she calmly resumed cutting her prime rib.

Across the room, the smug, expectant smile on Amber’s face instantly tightened. The younger woman shifted uncomfortably in her tailored emerald dress. She had wanted to see the older woman destroyed, but Julia's chilling indifference made Amber feel entirely insignificant.

Sitting just three chairs down from Julia was her 38-year-old son, Jason. Dressed in a sharp dark suit, with short brown hair, Jason didn't leap up to defend his mother. He didn't punch his father in the jaw. Instead, Jason simply looked down into his crystal glass of bourbon, gently swirling the amber liquid.

To the fifty horrified guests watching, Jason looked like a cowardly son who was too ashamed to intervene. But Jason wasn't ashamed. He was hiding a smirk.

Robert, completely unnerved by his wife’s robotic calmness, cleared his throat loudly. He needed to regain control of the narrative. He needed to prove he was the victor.

"I’m glad you're being reasonable, Julia," Robert sneered, trying to project his voice to the guests again. "The settlement I had my lawyers draft is more than fair. You get to keep the Bennett Corporation, and I walk away with the Cayman offshore accounts. A clean break."
